Achievements, beds and new locations make their way to SCUM

It seems like it was yesterday when SCUM launched to Steam Early Access, mainly because we’re still as excited about it as much as we were when Gamepires presented their vision to us for the first time. How could we not be? It just keeps getting better with god knows how many updates after the initial launch.

Another huge update was released yesterday, even though it wasn’t Friday (get your s**t together, Gamepires). This one brings many of the things the community has asked for including achievements, some new weapons and attachments, improvised beds and “a new place of happiness and joy” for you to go and have fun in.

As ever, the new update is full of various bugs and fixes, so be sure to check out the full change log by following the link below. There’s even a brand new SCUM comic page, so click now. ⬇️

Reboot Develop Blue 2019 – here we go!

With Reboot Develop Blue 2019 fast approaching, we’re once again getting ready for the biggest and craziest game developers conference in Europe. As every year, Croteam will be omnipresent with many talks, chats, and panels being held by our veterans and up-and-coming star developers alike.

This year we’re proud to be sponsoring a dedicated tech stage with talks by high-level engineers from all over the world sharing their vast knowledge. Our CTO Alen Ladavac will talk about the myths and misconceptions of frame pacing, explaining what it is that causes micro-stuttering we all so passionately hate in video games.

On the same stage, our engineer extraordinaire Karlo Jež will be joined by Alon Or-bach of Samsung Electronics to talk about Vulkan API, while Luka Hrabar and Robert Sajko will share info on huge GPU-based procedurally generated terrains in Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass.

On other stages, our Ante Vrdelja will chat about networking in video games, while Davor Tomicic and Nika Dvoravic will share knowledge on what their game and environment design are made of. Elsewhere, our composer Damjan Mravunac will talk about – you guessed it – making music and sound effects.

Hopefully, we’ll see some of you in Dubrovnik. If not, some of the talks will be recorded so you can watch them from the comfort of your own home. Albeit, that won’t include cocktails and the beautiful seaside.

Serious Sam: Tormental dashes into Early Access

It’s yet another happy day at Croteam as we are thrilled to announce the launch of Serious Sam: Tormental via Steam Early Access. Tormental is made by Gungrounds as part of our Croteam Incubator division.

Serious Sam: Tormental is a rogue-lite twin-stick shooter where players embark on a journey through the tormented mind of a demigod of destruction – Mental. You will face Mental’s wicked imaginations and roam dark dungeons, beating various challenges and discovering secrets on the way.

The game is fully playable solo or with a friend in couch co-op and features four playable characters, with three different worlds and randomly generated areas that offer infinite replayability. In future updates planned for the weeks and months to come, Gungrounds is planning new perks, areas, characters and more.

En Route to Rouen – new Unity of Command II dev diary live

It’s no secret that we’ve recently partnered up with Croatian game-dev veterans and our friends over at 2×2 Games to create Unity of Command II

Good news: the game is progressing swimmingly and according to plan! Tom Uzelac, the lead designer, has done a good job with documenting the progress so far. His blogs (or Development Diaries) have a cult following of their own in the wargaming community.

Even if you never read those blogs, check out the latest entry, as Tom turns a new leaf and decides to focus more on the game itself instead of lamenting the process.

En Route to Rouen entry explains some of the most interesting new mechanics in Unity of Command II, such as dealing with enemy prisoners, gathering intel and piercing the fog of war to locate hidden enemy units. Pretty screenshots, too!

The Talos Principle Build 424910 is Live With Tobii Eye Tracking and DX12 Support!

It’s a happy day today, as The Talos Principle is getting the long-awaited engine upgrade we’ve been talking about ever since we launched Serious Sam Fusion. This update is very similar to the one we pushed to open beta a few weeks ago, but also fixes most of the things that were reported during the weeks that followed.

The highlights of the update are Tobii Eye Tracking and DX12 support, as well as further Vulkan tweaks.

We have worked closely with our friends from Tobii to implement exciting eye tracking features like Jam at Gaze, Connect at Gaze and Pick up at Gaze. Those features allow you to be more efficient in your problem solving adventures, while the Extended View feature and Clean UI improve your immersion in Talos’ world of puzzles and philosophy.

To celebrate this launch Tobii is about to have a cool contest, so be sure to jump on their Twitter page, give them a follow and await further instructions.

Whoah! Serious Sam is 18 years old

Serious Sam is 18 years old today! It was on March 21st, 2001 that Serious Sam: The First Encounter hit the shelves. Quite literally, as digital distribution was still a distant future back then.

We were young, super passionate and, after a successful tech test launched in the summer of 2000, confident that Serious Sam would resonate well with the gaming community. Turns out, we were right. Serious Sam: The First Encounter caused quite a stir in the gaming community, won dozens of awards (including Gamespot’s Game of the Year) and laid the foundation of everything Croteam is today.

Fast forward 18 years later and Serious Sam got numerous sequels, spin-offs and remasters on most platforms. Hell, we even sent Sam to virtual reality and as with everything else – had tons of fun doing so.

Check out the history of Serious Sam in this amazing video by FrameRater

Even though he’s 18 years old (and legally allowed to buy a beer here in Croatia, finally), Sam is still going strong and we can’t wait to take you on another journey of chaos and mayhem with Serious Sam 4.

Until then, we’ll raise a glass (of aforementioned beer) in Sam’s name and celebrate all of you for being Seriously awesome. Whether you’ve been demolishing hordes of aliens since day one or just joined our community we thank you for supporting us from the bottom of our hearts!

Serious Sam: Tormental is coming April 2nd, 2019 via Steam Early Access

Those of you who have been following us for the past couple of years know how much we love and support our local indie teams. It gets better, though. The early alpha build of Serious Sam: Tormental is available completely free via Itch.io right now. So jump in and get a taste of what’s to come.

At its core, this is a 3D rogue-lite top-down shooter that will take you deep into the mind of Sam’s greatest foe – Mental. Be sure to check it out on Steam, and add it to your wish list while you’re at it.

SCUM update 0.1.27.12125 is live!

The general rule is – you don’t patch your games on Friday. But, Gamepires are a crazy bunch so that’s exactly what they usually do with SCUM. They like to live on the edge. To be fair, it’s been all good so far, so we won’t judge. We’ll jump in the game instead. There’s much to enjoy.

For one, you can visit a new place, the Coal Mine, but that’s not all. SCUM got many smaller islands around the main one. You should go there, who knows what they hide.

There are more new additions, of course, along with many tweaks and fixes.

Finally, this update marks the beginning of a brand new weekly comic series that will help you understand the lore behind SCUM.

Unity of Command II announced in partnership with 2×2 Games

We’re proud to announce that Croteam’s partnered up with Croatian game-dev veterans 2×2 Games to create Unity of Command II, a sequel to the cult classic wargame Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign.

With the transition to 3D graphics, new features like Headquarters and refined core mechanics, as well as some new additions like supply hubs, road networks, and fog of war, 2×2 Games and Croteam are ready to take this operational-level wargame to the next level.

“We’re extremely happy to finally announce Unity of Command II. We have been working hard on making a sequel ever since the work on the first game was wrapped up. We can’t wait for everyone to jump in later this year and see the evolution in our vision of operational wargaming,” said 2×2 Games CEO, Tomislav Uzelac.

“You never know what to expect from Croteam! We’ve built our brand on chaotic shooter games in Serious Sam, went on to create a slow-paced philosophical gem in The Talos Principle and co-produced a survival megahit in SCUM,” said Roman Ribaric, Croteam CEO. “We love what 2×2 Games has done with Unity of Command and recognize the ingenuity behind it. We’re very excited to bring our experience to the table and make Unity of Command II the best wargaming title to date.”

Unity of Command II is scheduled for a Q3 2019 release. To stay up to date with all things Unity of Command II, wishlist the game on Steam today.

Tormental Brings It On With Some Serious Firepower

With the Early Access release fast approaching, our Croteam Incubator partners and friends from Gungrounds have made yet another dev-update on Serious Sam: Tormental. This one focuses on some of the weapons you will use to destroy Mental’s fantasy in this chaotic top-down rogue-lite shooter.

A deadly harpoon-gun, an electric shotgun, and a devastating flamethrower are just some of the toys in the arsenal Sam and his friends have at their disposal. But, you know what? All those descriptions sound way better when they are written by the game designer himself, so check out the full dev-blog by following the link below.

SCUM Early Access 3-month Roadmap is Here!

You have spoken, Gamepires have listened, and now you finally have an idea of where SCUM is going. It is going to be a blast, let us you tell you. Happy days!

We won’t go into detail, there’s an elaborate blog post on the SCUM store page for that, but we’ll offer a broken down version instead.

First up, some vehicle changes. Soon you’ll be able to enjoy vehicular gameplay the likes of which you will never forget, as the car physics are getting a huge upgrade. Elsewhere in-game you’ll be able to use a brand new inventory. The one SCUM has now is cool, and all, but nothing like the new one. Cross my heart.

One of the most important updates to SCUM by far is the base building system that will allow you to – build a base! Woooo! Who saw that coming?!

There are tons of changes planned for the following months, so be sure to check out the 3-Month Roadmap blog post by following the link below.
